Die Processing Line
Custom Jet Engine Assembly Stand
The primary driver behind this project was improving ergonomic working conditions. The stand lifts and rotates a large jet engine fan case, enabling workers to easily mount and assemble components without extra walking or bending.
In the past, the aerospace company who requested this piece was told the project was impossible without digging a large pit in their facility floor. However, the Blue Arc team avoided that obstacle and was able to design and fabricate a stand that completely met all of the client's needs and safety requirements.
Application:
- The Jet Engine Assembly Stand provides operators with an ergonomic workstation while mounting components on a part or workpiece.
Benefits:
- These lifts bring the part to the operator during the assembly process, providing a more ergonomic work experience for the operator.
- Decreases assembly time by eliminating the need to walk around the part in order to mount components.
- The stand can accommodate two different engine sizes, which helps save floorspace and combines processes to speed up the assembly time of the engines.
- Unique mechanical design did not require a pit to be dug in the floor, which saved the customer money up front.
Specifications:
- Size: 15' wide x 10' deep x 11' high
- Capacity: 8,500 lbs
- Power source: Dual, 5-ton ball screw actuator driven by a 10 hp gearmotor; Rotation is powered by a 3hp gearmotor via friction wheel
- Material: All heavy-duty, welded, carbon-steel tubing and plate
- Speed: Rotational speed is 2.5 rpm
- Safety features: 3-sided light curtains act as the primary safety guard, backed up by a safety laser scanner to ensure workers are not under the part while the lift is in motion
